When you consider the fact that you are a spirit, you have a soul (which is your mind, will and emotions) and you live in a body, let’s consider the law of first mention here. This is the principle that requires you to go to scripture where an event or doctrine is mentioned for the first time in the Bible. This principle also means you study the first occurrence of that mention, so you can grasp its fundamental meaning.
See, you are essentially a living spirit and you will live eternally in whichever realm you choose during your short term here on earth. The Message version of John 3:5-8 poetically describes the Holy Spirit as the “wind-hovering-over-the-water.” This is not something you comprehend with your natural mind, it can only be understood through your spirit. Did you ever try to read the Bible before you were born again?
It made no sense at all to your unregenerated thinking. But once you asked Jesus into your heart, the words off those pages started to speak to you about your own personal life. That is the invisible Voice of the Lord echoing through these pages. How else could a man or woman become so changed in their thinking except by renewing their mind in a book that has been the world’s best seller for 2000 years. And why is that? Because, like John 1: 1-5 says, Jesus speaks directly to your soul as you read His word.
“In the beginning [before all time] was the Word ([a]Christ), and the Word was with God, and [b]the Word was God Himself. 2 He was [continually existing] in the beginning [co-eternally] with God. 3 All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him not even one thing was made that has come into being. 4 In Him was life [and the power to bestow life], and the life was the Light of men. 5 The Light shines on in the [c]darkness, and the darkness did not understand it or overpower it or appropriate it or absorb it [and is unreceptive to it].”
5-6 Jesus said, “You’re not listening. Let me say it again. Unless a person submits to this original creation—the ‘wind-hovering-over-the-water’ creation, the invisible moving the visible, a baptism into a new life—it’s not possible to enter God’s kingdom. When you look at a baby, it’s just that: a body you can look at and touch. But the person who takes shape within is formed by something you can’t see and touch—the Spirit—and becomes a living spirit.
7-8 “So don’t be so surprised when I tell you that you have to be ‘born from above’—out of this world, so to speak. You know well enough how the wind blows this way and that. You hear it rustling through the trees, but you have no idea where it comes from or where it’s headed next. That’s the way it is with everyone ‘born from above’ by the wind of God, the Spirit of God.”
